China Daily news briefs (06/14) [ 2007-06-21 11:05 ] Gorillas go walkabout while keeper's in
the loo
Visitors to Nanjing Zoo got the fright of their lives
on Sunday when two gorillas escaped from their cage.
More than 30
people, including children, were watching the powerful primates from a safe
distance. However, when their keeper went to the toilet, one of the clever apes
managed to unlock the cage and the pair made a bid for freedom.
When the
keeper returned, the gorillas were separated from an anxious public by just a
1-m-high iron railing. Several visitors fled in panic, but, thankfully, the
keeper was able to coax the mighty apes back into their cage before anyone was
hurt.
The incident is currently being
investigated.
Traffic backs up as pigs make bid for freedom
Traffic on Guangzhou's Beihuan Expressway came to a standstill
on Sunday morning when 102 pigs filled the road after escaping from an
overturned lorry.
The accident took place at about 8:10 am when the
truck carrying the swine from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to Shantou in
Guangdong Province overturned.
More than 20 traffic police officers were
sent to the scene to help control the traffic, but it took more than half the
day to catch all the escaped pigs.
Driving too fast
and slippery conditions were blamed for the accident.
