>Spar over child support
Brad Pitt rebutted claims that he had failed to support his children and accused his estranged wife, Angelina Jolie, of trying to manipulate the media in their long drawn-out divorce. In the latest round of bitter accusations between the Hollywood power couple once known as Brangelina, Pitt's attorneys said the actor had paid over $1.3 million in bills for Jolie and their six children since their 2016 separation. In documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the attorneys also said Pitt had loaned Jolie $8 million to help her buy a new home. Jolie's attorney responded by saying that Pitt was charging Jolie interest on the loan for the new house and that the actress has had to shoulder most of the expenses for the children alone. Jolie had said in a Tuesday court filing that Pitt had "paid no meaningful child support" since Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016. Pitt's attorneys said that Jolie's claims were "a thinly-veiled effort to manipulate media coverage." Pitt and Jolie were married for two years and enjoyed a 10-year romance that had made the pair one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples. They have six children for whom Jolie is seeking primary custody.

>Oscars to add new category
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a number of changes to the Oscars, including the introduction of a new category. From next year, there will be an award for outstanding achievement in popular film, the first time a new Oscar has been introduced since best animated film in 2001. Details on eligibility have yet to be announced. In a letter sent to members, the Academy also announced that the telecast would now be kept to under three hours, which means that some of the 24 categories will be announced during commercial breaks and then edited into the ceremony later on.

>Skin bleaching in Africa
Skin lightening is popular in many parts of the world, including South Asia and the Middle East. But medical experts say that in Africa - a continent where regulations are lax or scorned - the widening phenomenon is laden with health risks. Africa is experiencing a "massive trend of increased use of skin bleaching, particularly in teenagers and young adults," said Lester Davids, a physiology professor at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. "The older generation used creams - the new generation uses pills and injectables," he said. In Nigeria alone, 77% of women, more than 60 million people - are using lightening products on a "regular basis", the World Health Organization said. The rich tend to opt for pricier registered products. Others are likely to buy creams, often bootleg concoctions mixed in the back streets, which may be dangerous. "These chemicals in the products damage respiratory, kidney and reproductive systems," an official from the Nigerian drug control agency warned. "They cause cancer, affect the nervous system, deform unborn babies."

>Solar probe launched
A space probe that aims to be the first to "touch the sun" was launched early Sunday morning. The $1.5-billion, car-sized Parker Solar Probe is designed to provide a close look at the sun's atmosphere - what astronomers call the corona - to answer questions about this ultra-hot region of our nearest star. Over the course of its seven-year mission, the probe will orbit the sun 24 times, each time sweeping through the corona, where the temperature is a blistering almost 1,400 degrees Celsius. At its closest approach, the probe will be just 3.8 million miles above the sun's surface. The probe will give scientists a better understanding of solar wind and geomagnetic storms that risk wreaking chaos on Earth by knocking out the power grid.
