>Reality show fame lucrative
Forget the struggles of completing an Oxbridge degree - a group of economists have calculated that appearing as a contestant on British reality TV show Love Island for eight weeks is likely to net you more money over the course of your life than three years at Oxford or Cambridge university. Analysis by Frontier Economics, an economic consultancy, estimated that someone who appears on the show could expect to earn 1.1 million pounds from subsequent sponsorship and appearance fees compared with a lifetime average return of 815,000 pounds from completing an undergraduate degree at Oxbridge. "If you've got an offer from Oxbridge and Love Island, you're better off going on Love Island," said Kristine Dislere, who completed her masters degree in economics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. But Dislere cautioned that despite the financial gains from up to eight weeks of event television, any teenager should still favor the academic route because the odds of getting a place are so much better. "One major thing we haven't included are the odds of getting in [to Love Island] and the odds are stacked against you," she said.

>Vienna the most livable city
Austria's capital Vienna has beaten Melbourne to be ranked the "world's most livable city" in a new annual survey released Monday, ending the southern Australian city's seven-year reign. It is the first time a European metropolis has topped the annual chart compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Japan's Osaka took third place. Researchers noted that several cities in the top 10 had relatively low population densities, which fostered "a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure". They said wealthy financial capitals such as Paris (19th), London (48th) and New York (57th) tended to be "victims of their own success", with higher crime rates and overstretched infrastructure dampening their appeal.

Have you always dreamed of escaping to an island with nothing but cats for company? Well, now's your chance. God's Little People Cat Rescue, based in a secluded nature preserved area on the Greek island of Syros, is looking for someone to look after 55-70 cats for while the sanctuary's owner, Joan Bowell, is away. Nearly 1,000 Britons applied for the role after the announcement posted by Bowell on Facebook last week went viral. Veterinarians, doctors and even refugees applied. Boswell said suitable candidates will be interviewed via Skype at the end of August. The position comes with a salary up to EUR600 a month, with bills, housing and veterinary expenses paid, amounting to four hours of work per day, starting Nov 1, after a voluntary two-week transition period in October.

>War on overwork backfires
Some South Koreans working by the hour have had to take additional jobs as a result of a law aimed at capping working hours and giving people more free time. On July 1, South Korea cut the maximum weekly work hours to 52, down from 68. But the new regulation intended to combat long hours in Seoul's steel and glass office towers has backfired for many doing manual or irregular labor, with people flocking to poorly regulated industries and facing pay cuts. A woman surnamed Park began working in a convenience store after she lost about 500,000 won a month due to the cap on working hours. A builder took a second job working a type of unofficial bus service when hours were cut to comply with the law. The National Assembly estimated that 150,000 laborers would face an average pay cut of 410,000 won a month when the law was passed due to working less overtime. About a third of South Korea's labor force works in jobs with irregular hours, such as construction, driving, cleaning or convenience store clerks, according to government statistics.
