>Tourists banned from sitting
Tourists visiting Venice may be banned from sitting on the ground, in a bid to rid the city of "boorish" visitors. Authorities in the Italian holiday hot spot are proposing fining people between 50 and 500 euros if they are caught sitting or lying on the floor. But some residents groups have hit back at the proposal saying there are so many rules in Venice now that there is nothing left that you can do. The proposal, put forward by mayor Luigi Brugnaro, will be voted on in October. Around 60,000 tourists enter the city each day.

>Commutes as part of job
Daily commutes should count as part of the working day because most of us spend the time catching up on work emails, British scientists say. Improved wireless internet connections on trains and advances to portable devices like laptops, smartphones and tablets mean our working hours have extended into our travels to and from the office, experts say. Scientists found more than half of train commuters use the free Wi-Fi to send work emails - a habit they argue threatens to disrupt people's work-life balance. Counting the journey as work could allow for more staggered commuter travel times, which would "ease commuter pressure on peak hours" travel, said the study co-author, Dr Juliet Jain.

>Couple give up perfect life
To outsiders, Faye and Matthew Gooding and their five young sons appear to have perfect lives. For the couple themselves, however, this "materially perfect world" was lacking something – so now they are giving up all their possessions to travel round the world with their sons. "When we told the kids they were so excited they were going to have so much time as a family. It made us realize no amount of toys or material possessions compensates for time spent with your children," said Mrs Gooding.

>Americans' rent checks
About 43 million American renters spent a record $485.6 billion on rent checks in 2017, up by an incredible $4.9 billion from 2016, according to a new report from real estate database Zillow. On average, renter households spent nearly $11,300 last year, with the highest-paying renters living in New York City and Los Angeles. The number of American choosing to rent rather than buy their home has steadily increased in the past decade. About 1 million new renters join the market each year, and new renters are older and wealthier, according to a recent report from Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies.
