>Face-slapping game in Russia

The Russian city of Krasnoyarsk recently hosted the country's first-ever amateur face-slapping championship, which had participants slap each other across the face until one of them got knocked out.

Competitors faced each other across a small table similar to the ones used in arm-wrestling competitions, and hit each other across the face with the palm of their hands.

Ideally, one of the two men would be knocked out by the slap, but if both were left standing after taking three slaps, a judge would decide the winner based on power and technique.

Apparently, organizers didn't think it was necessary to have different weight categories, which allowed 28-year-old Vasily Kamotsky, a 168-kg farmer and fitness enthusiast, to decimate the competition.

Kamotsky easily won the face-slapping contest and got 30,000 rubles as a prize. He also became an overnight sensation after videos of the competition went viral online.

Organizers have already invited him to take part in another face-slapping contest, this time against professional athletes.

>System warns 'phone zombies'

A city in South Korea has installed flickering lights and laser beams at a road crossing to warn "smartphone zombies" to look up and drivers to slow down, in the hope of preventing accidents.

The designers of the system were prompted by growing worries that more pedestrians glued to their phones will become casualties in a country that already has some of the highest road fatality and injury rates among developed countries.

In addition to red, yellow and blue LED lights on the pavement, "smombies" - smartphone zombies - will be warned by a laser beam projected from power poles and an alert sent to the phones by an app that they are about to step into traffic.

The multidimensional warning system is operated by radar sensors and thermal cameras and comes with a price tag of 15 million won per crossing.

>Tall, slim women live longer

A woman's height and weight appear to play a greater part in her chance of enjoying a long life than a man's, according to a study investigating a person's likelihood of reaching the age of 90.

Women who are taller than average, standing at 5ft 9 inches or above, were 31% more likely to enter their ninth decade compared with those standing at 5ft 3 inches or less, the study suggested.

The same result wasn't found in men.

And while exercising was found to boost the lifespan, working out for one hour a day was best suited to women before the effects plateaued. In men, there was no such cap.

"Thus, we advise the readers to adapt a healthy weight and at least 60 min of physical activity a day," researchers said.

>'The Scream' is not screaming

The figure in Edvard Munch's iconic artwork, "The Scream", is not actually screaming, as is widely assumed, the British Museum said. Instead, it is reacting to a scream.

Munch, a Norwegian artist, finished the first painting in 1893, but made several more versions.

Munch made clear what was going on in an inscription on a rarely seen black-and-white version of the image, which Munch annotated with the words "I felt the great scream throughout nature."

According to Giulia Bartrum, who is curating a Munch exhibition at the British Museum which features the black-and-white lithograph, this shows that the figure is hearing the scream rather than making it.

In the decades since, the image has morphed into a universal symbol for anxiety, and is clearly referenced in the "person screaming" emoji.

According to the emoji tracker website, it is the 53rd most frequently used emoji.
