>Amazon destroys new items

Amazon destroys millions of brand-new items including televisions, books and nappies it cannot sell, an investigation has revealed.

Lorry-loads of goods, many still in their packaging, are dumped in sprawling landfill sites or incinerated.

The shocking waste was revealed by undercover investigators who secretly filmed in one of Amazon's enormous warehouses.

Reporters posing as Amazon workers discovered an area called the "destruction zone" where they covertly filmed staff loading pristine toys, unused kitchen equipment and flat-screen TVs into skips to be transported to dumps.

Later, cameras fitted to a drone tailed a truck crammed with expensive consumer goods from an Amazon warehouse to a waste disposal center and on to a landfill site.

In the TV documentary, shown on French channel M6, investigators obtained official Amazon figures that showed that more than three million brand-new products were destroyed in France last year.

>Moon shrinks like a raisin

The moon's interior is gradually cooling down, causing it to slowly shrivel up like a raisin, and causing "moonquakes," NASA said this week.

The moon has become about 150 feet "skinnier" over the last several hundred million years, causing it to develop "wrinkles", NASA said.

The agency likened the shrinkage to a grape shrivelling into a raisin."But unlike the flexible skin on a grape, the Moon's surface crust is brittle, so it breaks as the Moon shrinks, forming 'thrust faults' where one section of crust is pushed up over a neighboring part," it added.

These faults are also "likely producing moonquakes" that can be as strong as a magnitude-5 quake on the Richter scale, NASA cited Thomas Watters, a senior scientist at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, as saying.

>Adults' body image worries

One in eight British adults have experienced suicidal thoughts or emotions because of concerns about their body image, a survey by the Mental Health Foundation shows.

While the issue of body image in children, particularly girls, has come to the fore in recent years, the charity says its research illustrates people can be adversely affected regardless of gender or age, with many of the same drivers, such as social media and advertising, at play.

Among its recommendations are the vetting of adverts related to "high-risk industries", such as cosmetic surgery, weight loss and fashion.

>Night shifts block DNA repair

Night shift work may stop the body repairing daily damage to DNA and raise the risk of mutations that lead to cancer, a new study suggests.

US researchers have discovered that when people work nights they produce 80% less of a chemical that is a by-product of DNA tissue repair.

This indicates that the body is not carrying out the crucial restoration to cells that should happen naturally overnight.

Scientists believe the effect could be caused by a lack of melatonin, the sleep hormone, which is far lower among people who sleep in the daytime.

They believe that shift workers may need to take sleep hormone supplements to allow DNA to carry out repairs as they sleep in the day.

If such effects are confirmed, melatonin supplementation should be explored as an intervention to reduce the occurrence of potentially carcinogenic DNA damage among shift workers, said Dr Parveen Bhatti from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington.
