>Swiss open-air hotel a hit

It looks more like a film set than a hotel. But this open-air Swiss attraction has hundreds of people queuing up to stay, despite it having no ceiling, walls, toilet or indeed any facilities at all.

Perched atop the Gobsi mountain in the Swiss Alps, The Null Stern hotel costs £237 per night and is solely a double bed, with a nightstand and lamps, entirely open to the elements.
Null Stern

The nearest public loo is 10 minutes away.

Reservations can be cancelled at short notice due to bad weather.

However, guests are able to be immersed in nature at 3,900 feet above sea level at the top of the mountain.

What is more, they will have a butler on hand to welcome them and serve them a salami sandwich and coffee in the morning.

China has embraced Western fashion and futuristic technology as its economy boomed in recent decades, but a growing number of young people are looking to the past for their sartorial choices and donning traditional "hanfu", or "Han clothing".

These historic costumes of the Han ethnic majority are enjoying a renaissance in part because the government is promoting traditional culture.

Period dramas have also contributed to the surge in interest for traditional Chinese garb - "The Story of Minglan", a TV series set in the Song Dynasty, garnered more than 400 million viewers in three days when it debuted earlier this year.

There is no uniform definition of what counts as hanfu since each Han-dominated dynasty had its own style, but the outfits are characterized by loose, flowing robes that drape around the body, with sleeves that hang down to the knees.

>Box-office decline in China

China's January-to-May box-office revenue has declined for the first time since 2011.

A report from box-office tracker Maoyan shows that China's 64,510 screens had grossed 27 billion yuan as of May 31, down 5.1% year-on-year.

The decline may be due to a drop in the number of theatergoers.

From January to May, cinemas on the mainland registered 688 million admissions, plummeting 13.5% from 796 million admissions in the same period in 2018, according to the report.

Chinese films are encountering a bigger decline than foreign films.

Chinese films accounted for 54.8% of the total box office, while the number in 2018 was 63%.

>Graduates shun 1st-tier cities

College graduates in China are leaving first-tier cities for second-tier ones, according to the annual College Graduates' Employment Report.

The report said that only 21% of college graduates last year chose to work in first-tier cities - Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen - down 4 percentage points from 2014.

Wang Boqing, founder of MyCOS, said large populations, traffic congestion, smog, surging property prices and difficulty in obtaining permanent residence, or hukou, have made life in first-tier cities less attractive for college graduates, which gives second-tier cities an opportunity to attract talented workers.

Second-tier cities have also rolled out favorable policies to attract university graduates, which include preferential treatment to obtain hukou, as well as housing and government subsidies.

Around 37.3% of college graduates who chose to work in one of the top 10 second-tier cities such as Hangzhou, Chengdu, Ningbo and Wuhan were from other regions in 2018, up 9.4 percentage points from 2014, the report said.
