The membership of the 98-year-old Communist Party of China (CPC) has exceeded 90 million, the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee said on Sunday. About 34% of Party members were born in the 1980s and 1990s, and nearly half hold junior college degrees or above, the department said in a report released ahead of the anniversary of the founding of the CPC on July 1.

The CPC had 90.59 million members at the end of last year, an increase of 1.03 million from the end of 2017, and 4.61 million primary-level Party organizations, up by 39,000, according to the report.

>'Mona Lisa' to be moved

The world's most famous painting, the "Mona Lisa", is to be moved so her room in the Louvre can be spruced up, the Paris museum said.

Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece will be carried less than "100 paces" to the adjoining Medici gallery during the night of July 16, said the museum's director Jean-Luc Martinez.

The fragile 500-year-old painting is very rarely handled, and will remain protected by bulletproof glass in its temporary home.

Martinez said the move was part of an immense rolling renovation of the museum, which is struggling to cope with more than 10 million visitors a year.

The portrait of a Florentine noble will be returned to her spot just before a blockbuster Leonardo exhibition opens at the world's biggest museum in October.

>Trump steps into DPRK

With smiles and handshakes, a third meeting between US President Donald Trump and DPRK top leader Kim Jong-un unfolded at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone on Sunday.

Trump crossed the military demarcation line between the DPRK and the ROK with Kim, onto DPRK soil, becoming the first sitting US president ever to set foot in the country.

After exchanging handshakes and a few words, the two leaders stepped back to the ROK side of the village and met with ROK President Moon Jae-in, before going into one-on-one talks behind closed doors at the Freedom House on the southern side of Panmunjom and agreed to resume stalled nuclear talks in the coming weeks.

The historic moves will hopefully inject fresh impetus into the denuclearization talks between Washington and Pyongyang, which have hit a stalemate since Trump and Kim's second summit in Hanoi in February ended without any agreement.

>JP resumes commercial whaling

Japan will resume commercial whaling Monday amid criticism from anti-whaling states and environmental groups after the country withdrew from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) on Sunday.

Japan's withdrawal from the IWC is the first time in its postwar history that it has withdrawn from a major international organization.

Japan has long maintained that most whale species are not endangered and that eating whale is a cherished part of its food culture.

Last September, the IWC's annual meeting rejected Japan's latest proposal to resume commercial whaling.

Japan announced its intention to withdraw from the international organization last December.

The country would abandon its controversial, and expensive, expeditions to the Southern Ocean and instead permit whaling fleets to operate in its coastal waters and exclusive economic zone.
