>Measures to fight violence

France unveiled Monday new measures to combat violence against women by their partners or ex-partners, seeking to toughen up the law as concerns mount over the number of women killed in the country.

Since the start of 2019, at least 117 women have been killed by their partner or former partner in France, according to a case-by-case study by AFP based on media reports.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said the measures would seek to broaden the definition of violence, including how harassment can lead to suicide.

Philippe said the rules covering medical confidentiality would be changed to make it easier to alert the authorities when a person is at risk of violence.

Philippe also pledged to seize firearms from abusive spouses and better train police to reduce the number of women killed by their partners.

He said the new measures would be inscribed in a bill to be presented to the French parliament in January, and that the plans would benefit from 360 million euros of annual funding.

>UK adults have poor numeracy

Millions of adults in the UK lack basic numeracy skills, with half of those of working age having the math ability expected of a primary school child, a new study shows.

This costs the economy £388 million a week, says the charity National Numeracy.

Two thousand adults aged 16 to 75 were asked five basic math questions by the charity with no time limit, and were allowed pen, paper and calculator.

Just over half got no more than two right.

They are "unprepared for everyday life," said the charity.

Bobby Seagull, a National Numeracy ambassador and television presenter, added: "As a school math teacher, I have seen too many young people and their parents experiencing math anxiety. This can damage their long-term confidence with numbers. As a nation, we need to challenge the notion that only a certain kind of person can do math."

>Asteroid could hit Earth

An asteroid the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is barreling toward Earth, and NASA has revealed the exact date it could strike our planet, as it released details of an asteroid, known as JF1, that is heading toward Earth.

The rock, a whopping 420ft across, is predicted to collide with the planet on May 6, 2022, with devastating consequences.

The American space agency has said that if the asteroid continues on its current trajectory, it could strike with a force of 230 kilotons (230,000 tons of TNT).

NASA believes there is a one in 3,800 odds that the asteroid will hit Earth on the expected date of May 6, 2022. They said there is a "small but appreciable chance" that JF1 could strike the planet.

>Asia's top 10 universities

For the first time, four of the top 10 universities in Asia are from the Chinese mainland, according to the latest rankings released on Wednesday by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

Tsinghua University ranked fourth in Asia, with Peking University fifth, Zhejiang University sixth and Fudan University seventh. Mainland universities' QS rankings have improved steadily.

There was only one mainland university in the top 10 when the rankings were first published in 2009, and just two in the top 20.
