>US Senate acquits Trump

US President Donald Trump was acquitted on Wednesday by the Senate after the chamber voted down both articles of impeachment against him that the House approved late last year.

Senators voted 52 to 48 to reject the first charge of abuse of power, and 53 to 47 against the second charge of obstruction of Congress.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who presided over the Senate trial of Trump's impeachment, announced the votes, saying that they are not enough to convict the president and remove him from office.

The Democratic-led House impeached Trump in December last year after an inquiry triggered by a whistleblower complaint that raised concerns about the White House's interactions with Ukraine.

>UK to ban petrol cars

Britain will ban the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars from 2035, five years earlier than planned.

The change comes after experts said 2040 would be too late if the UK wants to achieve its target of emitting virtually zero carbon by 2050.

People will only be able to buy electric or hydrogen cars and vans, once the ban comes into effect.

The UK is one of many countries looking to end the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles.

At the start of January, the Irish government announced plans to ban the sale of "fossil fuel cars" by the year 2030, while Denmark has also proposed a phaseout of new diesel and petrol car sales in 2030.

>Antiviral drug in clinical trials

The registration for clinical trials on the antiviral drug Remdesivir has been approved, and the first batch of pneumonia patients infected by the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) started taking the drug on Thursday, according to an official conference Wednesday. The approval is jointly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Health Commission and the National Medical Products Administration.

Remdesivir is a drug developed by Gilead Sciences, an American pharmaceutical company, said Cao Bin, head of the drug's clinical trial program. The drug has shown good antiviral activity against SARS and MERS coronaviruses in previous cell and animal experiments. It has also shown fairly good antiviral activity against the 2019-nCoV at the cellular level, said Cao.

A total of 761 patients have been enrolled in the trials, which will adopt a randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled study method. The trials, led by China-Japan Friendship Hospital and the Institute of Materia Medica under the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, will be conducted in several hospitals in Wuhan, including Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital.

>Over 24k online courses open

As of Sunday, more than 24,000 online courses for university students have been opened to guarantee the continuance of academic activities during the epidemic prevention and control period, according to a guideline released by the Ministry of Education. Free access to the courses, covering 12 undergraduate disciplines and 18 vocational college majors, has been provided on 22 online course platforms.

The guidance requires higher learning institutions to guide students to actively choose high-quality online courses. It also requires schools to establish a policy for mutual recognition and transformation of credits gained from online courses to ensure that students' studies are not affected by the epidemic.
