>Victoria applies for govt relief

Victoria Beckham has stopped posting boastful images from her charmed life on Instagram after she faced a public backlash over her decision to use a taxpayer-funded job retention scheme to pay her staff.

Last week, the Sun Online exclusively reported that the former Spice Girl, whose family is worth £335 million, will be using the government relief scheme to pay 30 of her employees at her fashion label Victoria Beckham Ltd.

She was criticized widely for "taking taxpayer money to furlough her staff and prop up her failing business."

The job retention scheme was set up by the British government amid the coronavirus pandemic to aid small businesses and prevent large-scale loss of jobs.

>Presidential primary canceled

The US state of New York on Monday canceled the state's scheduled for June 23, becoming the first state to do so due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Democratic members of the State Board of Elections voted to nix the primary as the risk of spreading coronavirus seems to be not affordable in the hard-hit state.

The cancellation followed Sen Bernie Sanders' decision to drop out of the presidential race and to endorse former Vice President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination, which makes a primary unnecessary.

With over 288,000 cases and more than 22,200 deaths, New York currently is the COVID-19 epicenter in the US, according to official figures.

>COVID-19 impacts mental health

The coronavirus pandemic is likely to have a "profound and pervasive impact" on global mental health, as billions struggle to cope with isolated living and anxiety spikes, experts warned.

In a paper published in Lancet Psychiatry, a panel of 24 specialists call for more funding for research into the impact COVID-19 may have on society's mental well-being.

Two accompanying surveys of the British public showed that most people questioned had experienced heightened anxiety and fear of becoming mentally unwell since the pandemic struck.

The surveys, conducted among more than 3,000 people in Britain, showed a wide range of fears arising from the pandemic.

These include increased anxiety, the effects of social isolation, the fear of becoming mentally unwell and accessing care if needed.

The experts cautioned that these symptoms were likely to continue well into the future, even after the current round of lockdowns are eased.

The authors called for real-time monitoring of anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide across the world, as well as the creation of treatment programs that can be accessed remotely.
