Yoshihide Suga, 71, became the 26th president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Monday, winning 377 votes.
9月14日，71岁的菅义伟以377票当选日本执政党自民党的第26任总裁。
Suga is set to be elected as Japan's 99th president at an extraordinary Diet session on Wednesday.
他将在9月16日的国会特别会议上出任第99任日本首相。
His rivals, Shigeru Ishiba, a former defense minister, got 68 votes and Fumio Kishida, a former foreign minister, got 89.
另外两名候选人，前防务大臣石破茂和前外交大臣岸田文雄分别获得68票和89票。
Suga is virtually assured of becoming the next prime minister due to the LDP's dominance in both chambers of Japan's bicameral parliament.

The election was triggered by Shinzo Abe's abrupt announcement late last month he was stepping down due to a recurrent health issue which also brought his first tenure as prime minister to an abrupt end in 2007.
上月底安倍晋三因旧疾复发突然宣布将辞去首相一职，因此自民党举行了这次党首选举。2007年，安倍也是因健康原因不得不突然结束了自己的第一任首相任期。
Suga, who has been one of Abe's closest confidants for almost eight years, has promised to continue Abe's economic policies and approach to tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

>Microsoft's bid rejected
TikTok已拒绝微软收购
Microsoft on Sunday said ByteDance will not be selling TikTok's US operations to the company.
微软9月13日表示，字节跳动不会将TikTok美国业务出售给微软。
"ByteDance let us know today they would not be selling TikTok's US operations to Microsoft. We are confident our proposal would have been good for TikTok's users, while protecting national security interests," Microsoft said in a statement.
微软在一份声明中表示："字节跳动今日已通知我们，不会将TikTok美国业务出售给微软。我们相信我们的提议将在保护国家安全利益的同时有利于TikTok用户。"
Another bidder for the wildly popular social media platform, Oracle, is gaining the upper hand as its negotiations for TikTok's US operations have intensified in recent days, Bloomberg reported.
彭博社援引知情人士的消息称，竞购这家广受欢迎的社交媒体平台的另一家公司——甲骨文近日正在加紧有关TikTok美国业务的谈判，该公司在竞购事宜上正取得优势。
US President Donald Trump set a deadline last month for TikTok to be sold to a US company by Sept 20 or face a ban.

Time magazine's latest cover will mark an approaching milestone in the coronavirus pandemic - 200,000 related deaths in the US - with the headline "An American Failure" and an illustration within a black border for only the second time in its history.

>Universities cut holidays

A number of universities have reduced holidays for the coming National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, as students are encouraged not to leave campus for nonessential travel to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
国内多所高校决定缩短即将到来的国庆中秋长假，鼓励学生非必要不离校，以防止新冠肺炎的传播。
This year's National Day holiday, which runs from Oct 1 to 8, has been extended one day as Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Oct 1.
今年10月1日恰逢中秋节，因此国庆假期比往年多了一天，从10月1日一直持续至10月8日。
Hubei University in Wuhan, for instance, has cut the eight-day holiday to a one-day break, but will begin the winter vacation at an earlier date as compensation.

North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power in Zhengzhou, Henan province, has halved the holiday to four days. It will start winter vacation a week earlier than scheduled instead.
