>Illegal securities activities to receive clampdown

China will clamp down on illegal activities in the securities market and promote the high-quality development of the capital market, an official document released on Tuesday said. It was jointly issued by the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council.

It specifies targets in upgrading the securities law enforcement and judicial systems by 2022 and 2025.

The targets include effectively curbing the frequent occurrence of major illegal and criminal cases and making notable advances in the transparency, standardization and credibility in the securities law enforcement and judicial system.

Efforts should be made to improve the securities legislation mechanism while strengthening criminal punishment and market discipline, the document read.

>Nearly 190 shot dead across US

Nearly 190 people were shot dead across the United States over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, a research organization.

The Chicago Tribune newspaper reported at least 95 people were shot in the city during the long weekend, and among those injured were two police officers from the Chicago Police Department.

In New York, there were 26 victims from 21 shootings from Friday to Sunday, the New York Police Department said.

Through the first 172 days of 2021, gun violence killed 9,420 Americans, an average of 55 people a day, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The figures include homicides and accidental gun deaths but not suicides.

Many experts already predicted gun violence will get even worse this summer, as it historically goes up with the arrival of warm weather.

Furthermore, most states have relaxed COVID-19 restrictions after months of shutdowns.
