>Virus probe political and biased

China cannot accept the current version of the second phase investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 virus launched by the World Health Organization, as the plan has been compromised by political manipulation and disrespect of scientific facts, Zeng Yixin, deputy head of the National Health Commission, said at a news briefing on Thursday.

Zeng said the plan has listed the hypothesis that China had violated lab regulations and leaked the virus as one of the major research objectives, and he was "very shocked" after reading the proposal.

Zeng said Chinese experts have voiced their suggestions for improving the investigation plan to WHO.

"We hope WHO can carefully consider the advice by Chinese scientists, take investigating the origin of the COVID-19 virus as a scientific question free from political interference, and proactively and properly conduct sustained investigations into the origin of the virus in various countries across the world," he said.

>China's talent dividend grows

China's workforce has seen significant quality improvement as it has dwindled in size over the past two decades, an official said on Wednesday. Yu Xuejun, deputy head of the National Health Commission, said the country's "population dividend" is waning but the "talent dividend" is growing. This is the base for our high-quality development and one of the most important foundations of China's economic and social development, Yu said during a news conference in Beijing.

Citing figures from China's once-a-decade census, Yu said the number Chinese workers holding college degrees reached 218 million last year, compared with just 46 million in 2000 and 120 million in 2010.

>Over 42m malware attacks detected

More than 42 million malware attacks were detected in China in 2020, said a cybersecurity report released Wednesday.

The United States and India are the leading sources of foreign malware attacks against China in 2020, according to the report released by the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT/CC). The number of malware attacks from the United States accounted for 53.1% of the total foreign attacks, and 7.2% of the foreign attacks were from India, said the report.

The US is also the leader in the number of servers controlled by foreign malware that launched cyber attacks against China, the report said, adding that the US had 19,000 such servers in 2020, followed by the Netherlands with 2,083 servers, and Germany with 1,923 servers.

The center started compiling the annual cybersecurity report in 2008.

>Brisbane to host 2032 Summer Olympics

The Australian city of Brisbane won the right to host the 2032 Summer Olympics in a vote at the 138th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Tokyo on Wednesday, two days before the opening ceremony of Tokyo 2020.

Australia has already hosted the Olympics twice, in Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

In 2017, IOC awarded the 2024 Games to Paris and the 2028 Olympics to Los Angeles.

In February 2021, IOC said that Brisbane was the preferred candidate to host the 2032 Games.

On June 10, IOC's executive board approved Brisbane as the single candidate for election.
