News Stories - Notting Hill Carnival
In their bright, colourful costumes the revellers have begun snaking their way through the streets of west London in the English capital. The smell of barbecues fills the air. It's Children's Day today; already they're limbering up to show off the dances that make this event such a spectacle.

But Europe's biggest street party is changing. For the first time, it's being organised by a limited company. There's also corporate sponsorship. The organisers hope with more than a million visitors over the weekend this event will turn in a profit.

The police too are out in force -- ten thousand are on duty at a cost of seven million dollars. Acting on intelligence, there have been twenty arrests in the run up to today. The police don't expect trouble, but are ready for it.
