德国警方4月29日称，校园枪击案中的凶手罗伯特·施泰因豪尔喜欢玩暴力的电脑游戏，并把被学校开除的事瞒着他父母。外电中有这样一句话：The teen-age gun enthusiast who killed 16 people and himself at his former school enjoyed violent computer games and kept his parents in the dark about his humiliating expulsion from school, police said Sunday. 这里"keep dark"的意思就是"保密；隐瞒"。还可以说"keep something from somebody"，例如：I'm geeting married again, but keep it dark, will you?

阿富汗流亡者、联合国专家和包括德国外交部长在内的各国外交官11月26日在德国就阿富汗的未来进行了初步谈判，在联合国的资助下，来自阿富汗4个反塔派别的大约30名代表于27日在波恩举行会谈。联合国的官员们希望此次会议能使阿富汗各派就战后过渡政府的框架和安全体系达成一致意见。此次阿富汗权力分治大会的主要目的是希望建立一个后塔利班过渡政府。外电的报道使用了这样的标题：Meeting Kicks Off Afghan Nation-Building. "kick off"就是"（会议等）开始"的意思。再如：The fundraising campaign was kicked off by a benefit concert. Kick off一词的原意是足球比赛的"中线开球"的意思。

在美国飞机轰炸伊拉克雷达基地的一则新闻中有这样一句话："US planes bombed a site in southern Iraq on Tuesday to knock out a radar". 那么在这里"knock out"是什么意思呢？这个词组的本意是指在拳击运动中击倒对手获胜，后来引申为"压倒；破坏；使震惊"等意思，在这里当然就是"破坏"的意思。"Knock oneself out"是"使自己筋疲力尽"，如"She's knocking herself out with all that work.." 此外，还有两个很相似的词组比较容易混淆: "knock somebody out (of something)" 是"淘汰某人"；而 "knock something out (on/against something)" 则是 (在……上磕净某物),如 "empty a tobacco pipe by knocking it against the table.

对于"连锁反应"这个词我们最常用的是"chain effect"，可是你知道它的其他说法吗？"These price rises will have a knock-on effect throughout the economy." 在这个句子中，"knock-on effect"也是连锁反应的意思，这个词组是指"以一连串相关事件为特征的反应"。除此之外，连锁反应还有一种说法是"domino effect"，也就是我们熟悉的多米诺骨牌效应。 但是"domino effect"这个词通常用于政治方面一件事或一个行动引起类似的（通常为不愿见到的）事件和行动接连发生的情况。例如：Employers fear a domino effect if the strike is successful, i.e. that there will be many other strikes as a result.
