Olympic silver medallists Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao led the pairs at the World Figure Skating Championships as China took the top two spots after the short program on Monday in Calgary.  With the absence of Russian Olympic champions Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin, Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao are the favourites to win the gold at the 2006 championships which opened on Monday. Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao, whose best showing at the World Championships was a bronze last year, posted a score of 65.58 points. Their compatriots Pang Qing and Tong Jian were in second with 64.98 points, while Russian national champions Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov were third with 63.04. "We are quite happy with our performance today," Tong said. "There were just small imperfections. We can do better in the free skating." Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao won the silver at the Turin Winter Games last month after Zhang Dan fell hard to the ice, injuring her knee. She now wears a protective bandage on the knee when she skates. "I feel much better now than at the Olympics," she said. "The inside ligament s in the knee were affected. I still have to stabilize the knee with a bandage." (Agency)
