请看外电相关报道:Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's commanding lead over opposition candidate Geraldo Alckmin narrowed slightly and the October election could go to a runoff vote, a poll showed on Tuesday.

Run-off源于动词词组run off(进行决赛),与play off(决赛)相比,“run off”常用来形容“投票选举”,而play off则用于“体育比赛”,请看下面两个例句:

The short-listed candidates will run off for presidency on Monday.(入围的总统候选人将在周一进行最后的决选。)
The losing semifinalists will play off for third place.(半决赛淘汰下来的选手将再赛以争夺第三名)。

You're plump; try and run off all those excess pounds.(你有些胖,要跑步减减肥。)
