Life at 52C: What is it like?

It's been called the 'hottest city on the planet'.

The people of Jacobabad in south Pakistan battle against temperatures of 52C for four months of the year.

Brick-maker Haq Nawaz wakes up at 4:30 am to work. He has to make 500 bricks every day.

Haq Nawaz
"We work at night due to the lower temperatures. We can't work in the afternoon because of the heat."

Jannat also finishes working in the fields before midday. She returns home to her children to help them cope with the heat.

Jannat
"We cook food, feed the children, and put them to sleep. We bathe the children several times, but the water is salty. It causes diarrhoea, and we often have to take them to the doctor."

People here say their only saviour is ice. But due to long power shortages, it is in short supply. Pakistan often suffers from power cuts which are blamed on mismanagement and little investment in infrastructure.

Local resident
"Because of constant load-shedding, the aircon and fridge at home don't work. That's why we have to buy ice. The children cry because of the heat."

This donkey-pulled contraption which works as a fan remains the only solution for residents unable to find shade.
