早期赴加的华人为修筑连贯加拿大东西的太平洋铁路做出了巨大贡献。但在1885年铁路竣工后，华人却受到极不公正的待遇。从那时起至1923年，中国移民被强迫交付所谓的“人头税”，开始是50加元，后来增至500加元。今天的加拿大政府就此问题道歉，对华人来讲具有较强的象征意义。
