Liu Qi, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of
the Communist Party of China and president of the Beijing Organizing Committee
for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) met with visiting Grand Duke Henry of Luxembourg September 4, 2006.
Welcoming the guest to Beijing, Liu said Luxembourg, a founding member of the
European Union, has had good relations with China and that his visit will push
forward the development of bilateral relations.
Liu briefed the guest on the preparatory work for the 2008 Olympic Games and
the status of social-economic development in Beijing. All new Olympic
competition venues are under construction now and efforts are being made to
carry out the concepts of "Green Olympics," "High-tech Olympics," and "People's
Olympics." In last August two test events were held in Qingdao and Beijing
separately and on September 6 the Beijing Paralympic Games mascot will be
unveiled.
Construction of environmental projects and infrastructure
facilities are underway and civility and Olympic education are being
promoted in Beijing, Liu said, adding that the capital city is taking the
Olympic Games as a good opportunity to promote social-economic development. He
believed that the Olympic Games also offered an opportunity for an increase of
exchange and cooperation in various fields between China and Luxembourg.
The Luxembourg leader told Liu that great changes have taken place since his
first visit to Beijing 18 years ago. He commended Beijing's development and
BOCOG's achievement in preparing for the Olympic Games, believing that Beijing
will hold a successful Olympiad.
Grand Duke Henry is on a week-long state visit to China from September 3 to 9
at the invitation of President Hu Jintao. The 51-year-old Grand Duke has been a
member of the International Olympic Committee since 1998.
