John: In Real English, we look at words and phrases that you might not find
in your dictionary.
Chen Li: 英语是一种十分定式化的语言，所以学习一些英国人在现实生活中使用的固定用法和俚语是十分必要的。
John: And today’s word is ‘spuds’…‘spuds’. That’s spelt S.P.U.D.S.
Chen Li: 它是什么意思
John: Well, it’s quite simple – spuds are potatoes
Chen Li: 土豆，为什么土豆有这样的俚语 说法呢？
John: Well I suppose it’s because traditionally, British food includes a lot
of spuds!
Chen Li: 那倒是真的，我注意到英国人的确是很多土豆，那么是不是在任何场合都可以使用spuds 来替代 potatoes 呢。
John: Yes, let’s hear an example.

A: I’m just going to the shops – do you need anything?
B: Oh, yes actually, could you get me a few spuds to have with dinner?
Thanks.
John: Of course in Britain we cook spuds in lots of different ways. You can
have roast spuds.
Chen Li: 烧烤土豆
John: or mashed spuds
Chen Li: 土豆泥
John: or just boiled spuds
Chen Li: 或者水煮土豆. Do you eat a lot of spuds John?
John: Well, I quite like spuds, but I do eat lots of other things too, like
rice and pasta. These days in Britain we eat lots of different types of food –
like Chinese food for example.
Chen Li: 我是注意到在这里，中国菜很受大众欢迎，通常很少有以土豆为主要原料的菜肴。
John: No, I suppose there aren’t many spuds in Chinese cooking.
