Rowing-Canoeing Park, a brand-new venue for the 2008 Olympic Games will host the
2007 World Junior Rowing Championships, which will start on August 8, one year
ahead of the Olympics.
The pumping system of the Canoe/Kayak-Slalom site
passed the test on March 16 this year, meaning that the essential function of
the rough water area is on track and its basic conditions can meet the
requirements of the Olympics' "Good Luck Beijing" events, including the International Rowing Federation (FISA) Junior
Championships, said Zhang Xiangdong, deputy chief of the project.
From October 31 to December 6, 2006, two million cubic meters of water were
channeled into the park's rowing courses. The water has reached the required
depth, Zhang said, adding the park's flat water area is 2,242 meter long and 3.5
meters deep.
Designed to be 3,000 meters long and 900 meters wide, and located in the
Shunyi district in northeast Beijing, the park is the largest Olympic venue to
be built from scratch. It will host such events as rowing, canoe-kayak flat
water, canoe-kayak slalom and swimming, with a total of 32 gold medals to be
awarded.
The project is a model of environmental protection, as its micro-pollution water treatment system is China's largest,
which allows the water to be recycled in 35 to 40 days. Besides, a forest park
will be built around the venue simultaneously, constructor Zhang Lei said.
