Christine Welch's "One Million Possibilities", which was initially recorded in 2013, blew up on Chinese video sharing platform Douyin sometime in 2018. Evoking imagery of winter and the endless possibilities built into every living moment, the beautiful ballad struck a deep chord with Chinese netizens, and many began using it as a backing track for their Douyin videos.
American Christine Welch sang a new version of the Chinese pop song "A Million Possibilities," with lyrics inspired by works of Chinese ancient philosopher Zhuangzi, on the latest edition of "Everlasting Classics," a variety show on China Central Television (CCTV).
The adapted version used more symbols relating to Zhuangzi, including butterflies, dreams, Penglai fairyland, etc. It also kept the original terms like "tears of the clouds," "snowflakes" and "winter night," reflecting a Chinese classical beauty.
All of the symbols create a graceful, restrained and poetic setting to the song. When the words flowed out in her clear and steady voice, she stirred empathy from the crowd of listeners... In one part, the rhythm sped up, creating a rap-like modern feeling to the ancient classic-based song.
"I believe the number of young people like her is not merely one or two," he said, "but a lot. All the thinking young people across the world will realize, inside the Chinese ancient philosophy and poetry, there is wisdom, poetic beauty and a driving force that can invigorate their desire for life."
When she went to Northwestern University in her hometown to further her studies, she took up Chinese literature. After graduating in 2010, Welch went on to study for four months at the Beijing Foreign Studies University in China.
“Chinese characters are very beautiful and the language sounds very tuneful, it feels like I'm singing. As a songwriter, I love writing lyrics in Chinese. The language is subtle, beautiful and poetic. Unlike English, which is quite straightforward.”
“A lot of the videos I see are just like, ‘Oh, this foreigner sings Chinese!’ I hope that people will be able to recognize that I'm an individual and, like, be able to know my name.”
