>Turmoil fuels shopping spree
Foreign shoppers were lined up outside of some of the most exclusive and expensive retailers in Turkey to take advantage of the plunge of the Turkish lira. In the past seven days, Turkey's currency, the lira, has lost 27% of its value against the US dollar. Istanbul's IstinyePark and Zorlu Center, shopping centers featuring European luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel, were flooded with tourists over the weekend. Local media reported that the number of tourists visiting the malls surged by 30% from the same period last year. A 22-year-old standing in a line outside a Louis Vuitton shop spotted by Bloomberg said, "Turkey is now the cheapest place in the world for shopping." Factoring in the currency devaluation in the last week alone, everything is at least 25% cheaper in Turkey than in the US.
>Jobs' daughter pens memoir
Steve Jobs told his daughter she smelled "like a toilet" as he lay dying of cancer – one of a series of startling claims about the Apple founder in her new memoir. The new book, Small Fry, details the estranged relationship that existed between the tech entrepreneur and his first daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs. In an excerpt of the book published in Vanity Fair, Brennan-Jobs recalls how Jobs told her while he was dying of pancreatic cancer that the rose-scented spray she'd sprayed on herself made her smell like a toilet. Jobs' brutal honesty was a common occurrence when he spoke to his daughter, a quality of their relationship that Lisa believes stemmed from his shame over her birth. "You're not getting anything. You understand? Nothing. You're getting nothing," Jobs once told her when she'd enquired whether she could have his Porsche when he was done with it. Lisa was born to the Apple founder and Chrisann Brennan in 1978 after the couple had dated for five years, however, they parted ways when Brennan became pregnant.
>New online beauty stars: Men
Online beauty stars form an enormous industry in China, with internet celebrities known as "wang hong", or online stars, blurring the line between entertainment and e-commerce. Cosmetics brands pay big money for online celebrities, almost always female, to review their new products. But now the market and gender norms are changing, with cosmetics no longer seen as exclusively for women and male celebrities showing that it is okay for men to dab on a bit of blush. Increasingly, foreign firms like La Mer and Aesop are working with video bloggers, such as "Lan Pu Lan", to promote their products to his nearly 1.4 million followers. The 27-year-old spends up to 10,000 yuan a month on beauty products and says China's "Little Fresh Meat" - a term referring to young good-looking men - is spearheading this trend. "We're seeing more men in the media wearing make-up. This will naturally become the norm," he said.
>Xu Zhimo Garden in Cambridge
The first formal Chinese garden in the English city of Cambridge was officially open during the fourth-annual Cambridge Xu Zhimo Poetry and Art Festival. The China-UK Friendship Garden, which is also known as Xu Zhimo Garden, memorializes the late Chinese poet Xu Zhimo, who was an associate member of King's College in 1921-22. Xu wrote the famous poem, Second Farewell to Cambridge, in 1928, after his third visit to the city. Filled with his longing for Cambridge, as well as thoughts about his first love affair, the poem has been learned by millions of schoolchildren in China. The poem's first and last lines have been carved into a granite stone that has become one of Cambridge's most popular tourist attractions. The idea to create the memorial garden was first developed by Steven Coghill, the senior horticulturist at King's College. The garden took three years to plan and build. The garden features many plants that grow naturally in Xu's home province of Zhejiang. It also contains plants sourced from neighboring provinces.
