>Number of pet dogs slides
Japan's aging population and the higher cost of keeping dogs has likely contributed to the sliding number of pet canines in the country, with cats overtaking them this year for the first time since an annual survey began in 1994, according to industry experts. A survey released by the Japan Pet Food Association showed that the estimated number of pet cats stood at 9,526,000 in 2017, remaining almost unchanged in recent years, while the number of dogs fell to 8,920,000, down for the third consecutive year. "The biggest reason behind the fall in the number of pet dogs is probably declining birthrate and graying population," said a public relations officer at major pet company Aeonpet Co. She says more elderly people are giving up on dogs and keeping cats instead due to the perception that dogs require greater care as owners need to take them out for walks every day and are legally obliged to get them vaccinated. According to the association, the average cost of keeping a dog for its entire lifetime is estimated at about 1.6 million yen while that of a cat about 1.08 million yen. The gap possibly affected people's choices.

>'Sadblock' blocks bad news
In the old days, you had to go looking for crushing existential horror. Now, you can just wake up and glance at literally any social media site, and a bevy of it will be waiting for you. That's where Google Chrome extension Sadblock comes in. It helps you out by cleaning up sad, triggering, and sometimes just plain annoying news from your social media feeds. Sadblock will help you "take back control of your social feeds" by allowing you to block certain types of posts from your social media. Current categories include sad stories, political posts, climate change posts, and those that include common trigger words. Basically, Sadblock is intended to help people unwind and take a mental breather away from the constant influx of horrible information. It's not intended to help people ignore reality.

>APP rents out handbags
Smartphone apps have caused an evolution in the luxury industry, with many consumers increasingly inclined to borrow luxury items. And Japanese companies have met the demand, renting out their products to give customers access to accessories that might normally be out of their price range. Laxus Technologies Inc launched its app in February 2015. The bag-sharing apps' most popular brands are Louis Vuitton, Prada, Fendiand Gucci. Using the app, members can rent trendy bags for a fixed monthly price of $60.

>Employees care about respect
A study shows that employees value whether they are respected in a company more than the salary offered. Increasing numbers of those born after 1995 are starting to enter the workplace, a generation that has more diversified values and thinks highly of their personal experiences, according to the 2018 China's Top 100 Employers report by Chinese job website Zhaopin.com and Institute of Social Science Survey of Peking University. Employers need to create a corporate culture that is inclusive, open, innovative and respectful in order to attract people with different qualities, said the study. Guo Sheng, CEO of Zhaopin.com, said the core incentive mechanism at a good company is not the salary but the level of respect, training and self-fulfillment. According to the report, 34% of this year's top 100 enterprises are wholly foreign-owned, 75% are in first-tier cities and 65% have more than 10,000 employees.
