Iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld - dubbed "Kaiser Karl" among peers and the fashion news media - has died in Paris following a short illness. He was around 85 years old. The German designer, who was the creative director for Chanel and Fendi, was one of the industry's most prolific figures and worked up until his death. His signature ponytail and dark glasses made him an instantly recognizable figure around the world. Industry heavyweights, including Italian designer Donatella Versace, issued heartfelt tributes. Rumors of Lagerfeld's ill health had swirled for several weeks after he missed a number of events, including Chanel's spring/summer show last month. He died on Tuesday morning after being admitted to hospital the night before, French media reported.

>'Mother' and 'father' banned

The French parliament has voted to banish the words "mother" and "father" from official paperwork in the education system to tackle discrimination against gay parents. Children's documents will instead refer to "Parent 1" and "Parent 2". President Emmanuel Macron's Republique en Marche party backed the amendment to the Schools of Trust law in the interest of "anchoring the diversity of families with children in the law". The move has angered conservatives and Christians who argue that it signals the country's moral decline. Groups fiercely opposed to same-sex marriage have called for civil disobedience if the move is approved by the Senate. Traditionalists claim that the next move will be to delete the words "mother" and "father" from the French language.

A model of China's future double-decker bullet train was unveiled by the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Monday, with experts predicting it could reach speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour. Zhang Weihua, a bullet train expert who is also a professor at Southwest Jiaotong University, said that the double-decker bullet train will be able to run at the same top speed as a fast single-deck train. But a critical problem that needs to be solved is that it may lose stability due to centrifugal forces when turning at high speeds. Zhang said he believed that once design and technical problems such as the train's low center of gravity and large passenger capacity are solved, the safety will be fine as long as the train operates at appropriate speeds. China's double-decker bullet train, which is targeting the international market, would have a base speed of 160 km/h, Zhang said, but, when fitted with core components designed according to the current standards for high-speed trains, will be capable of much higher speeds.

>Coalition of states sues Trump
美16州联合起诉特朗普
California and 15 other states sued US President Donald Trump on Monday over his decision to declare a national emergency to free up funding for his controversial border wall, calling the move "unlawful and unconstitutional". The states allege in their lawsuit that Trump's emergency declaration exceeds the power of the president and unconstitutionally redirects federal money that Congress had set aside for other purposes. "We're going to go out there and make sure that Donald Trump cannot steal money from the states and people who need them, since we paid the taxpayer dollars to Washington, DC, to get those services," said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. The US Transportation Department said on Tuesday it will cancel $929 million in federal funds awarded by the Obama administration for a California high-speed rail project.
