2月5日，在贵州考察调研的中共中央总书记、国家主席、中央军委主席习近平会见了500米口径球面射电望远镜“中国天眼”项目负责人和科研骨干。习近平强调，广大科技工作者要勇攀世界科技高峰，在一些领域实现并跑领跑，为加快建设科技强国、实现科技自立自强作出新的更大贡献。
During his recent inspection trip in Guizhou province, President Xi Jinping met with the project leaders and core scientists of China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, called on scientists to make efforts to scale the heights of global science, secure new achievements in key fields and make greater contributions to developing China's scientific and technological strength at a faster pace and realizing the country's self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology.

“中国天眼”学名叫500米口径球面射电望远镜，是世界上最大的单口径射电望远镜，具有我国自主知识产权。
2016年“中国天眼”落成启用，习近平总书记曾专门致信祝贺。二〇一七年新年贺词中，他又专门提及“中国天眼”。此次贵州之行，他亲切会见了“中国天眼”项目负责人和科研骨干，愈发凸显了这一国之重器的重要意义，再度宣示了我们勇攀世界科技高峰、加快建设科技强国、实现科技自立自强的决心和信心。
