>Remains of Chinese martyrs back home

The eighth batch of remains of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) martyrs, who sacrificed their lives during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53), returned to the homeland on Thursday.

The 109 remains and 1,226 related relics were excavated from six regions in South Korea between 2019 and 2020, according to the South Korean defense ministry.

In 2014, South Korea agreed with China to repatriate the remains of fallen Chinese soldiers according to international law and humanitarian spirit, the ministry said.

From 2014 to 2020, South Korea had returned the remains of 716 Chinese People's Volunteers martyrs killed in the Korean War.

>Weather disasters increase fivefold

Weather-related disasters increased fivefold in the past half-century, the latest report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Wednesday.

However, thanks to improved early warning systems and disaster management, the number of deaths from these hazards declined sharply.

According to the WMO Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes (1970-2019), there were more than 11,000 reported disasters globally, with over 2 million deaths and $3.64 trillion in losses.

More than 91% of these deaths occurred in developing countries.

>Lang resigns as volleyball head coach

Lang Ping announced on Wednesday that she has stepped down as head coach of China's national women's volleyball team.

The China Volleyball Association also confirmed that Lang's contract expired on Aug 31.

"Today is my first day after leaving the post of head coach of China women's volleyball team. I feel fulfilled and happy when I look back on my volleyball career. I am grateful for all the support I have received from people who love volleyball," Lang wrote on social media.

Known as the "Iron Hammer" during her playing career, Lang took over the Chinese women's team for the second time in 2013.

Under Lang's guidance, China won Olympic gold in Rio 2016, as well as 2015 and 2019 World Cup titles.

But China failed to progress through the group stage at last month's 2020 Olympic Games after losing to Turkey, the United States and Russia.
