>Facebook changes its name to Meta
Facebook正式宣布更名为Meta

Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a major rebrand.
Facebook正式宣布将公司名更改为Meta。

The company said it would better "encompass" what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR).
该公司称,这个新名字能更好地"包容"旗下业务,不光是社交媒体,还有虚拟现实等即将拓展的新领域。

The word "meta" comes from the Greek word meaning "beyond".
Meta一词来自希腊语,意思是"超越"。

The change does not apply to its individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, only the parent company that owns them.
公司旗下的Facebook、Instagram和Whatsapp等单个平台将不会更名,只有母公司才使用Meta这个新名称。

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name as he unveiled plans to build a "metaverse" - an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often using VR headsets.
Facebook老板马克•扎克伯格宣布新名称的同时还公布了打造"元宇宙"的计划。"元宇宙"是人们可以在虚拟环境中(通常通过佩戴虚拟现实头盔)玩游戏、工作和交流的一个网络世界。

He said the existing brand could not "possibly represent everything that we're doing today, let alone in the future", and needed to change.
扎克伯格表示,现有的品牌名称无法"代表我们现在所做的所有业务,更不用说将来的业务",所以需要更改。

Zuckerberg said the new name reflects that over time, users will not need to use Facebook to use the company's other services.
扎克伯格称,新名字意味着,未来用户无需使用Facebook也可以使用公司的其他服务。

>Safe-injection sites for drug users
美国开设毒品安全注射中心

Rhode Island is set to become the first state to create safe-injection sites for intravenous drug users, as overdoses take over from car crashes as the number one cause of accidental death in the US.
在美国,吸毒过量已经超过车祸成为导致意外死亡的头号原因。因此,罗德岛州将为静脉注射吸毒者设立全美首个毒品安全注射中心。

The state is set to codify rules for operating supervised injection sites in a two-year pilot program by January, with locations to be agreed upon by March.
该州将在明年1月前制定一项为期两年的安全注射中心运营试点计划,并在3月之前确定注射中心的选址。

The main drugs that will be intravenously injected in a safe, supervised environment will be heroin and methamphetamine, which will be administered by trained personnel.
在这个受监管的安全注射中心内,静脉注射的主要毒品是海洛因和甲基苯丙胺,这些毒品将由受过培训的工作人员负责注射。

Injection-site staff will be equipped with naloxone, which is an antidote used in reversing opioid overdoses.
注射点的工作人员将配备纳洛酮,纳洛酮是一种用于治疗过量吸食阿片类药物的解毒剂。

Safe injection sites have been slammed by critics who say they encourage illegal drug taking and bring crime to the surrounding area.
安全注射中心遭到批评人士的猛烈抨击,他们表示,这些场所鼓励非法吸食毒品,并导致周围地区犯罪增加。

>'Vax' declared word of the year
Vax当选牛津词典年度词汇

Vax has been chosen as word of the year by lexicographers at the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).
Vax被《牛津英语词典》评为年度词汇。

Words related to vaccines have spiked in frequency in 2021 due to Covid, with double-vaxxed, unvaxxed and anti-vaxxer all seeing a surge in use.
由于新冠肺炎疫情,2021年与疫苗相关的词汇更加频繁出现,"接种过两剂疫苗的"、"未接种疫苗的"和"反对疫苗人士"这些词汇的使用频率骤增。

Oxford senior editor Fiona McPherson says vax was an obvious choice, as it has made "the most striking impact".
《牛津英语词典》高级编辑菲奥娜•麦克弗森称,"Vax"是最合适的选择,因为这个词的"影响是最大的"。

This year's Oxford-winning word, vax, was first recorded in English in 1799, while its derivatives vaccinate and vaccination both first appear in 1800.
Vax于1799年首次出现在英语中,其衍生词"vaccinate"和"vaccination"首次出现于1800年。

All of these words ultimately come from the Latin word vacca, which means cow.
这些单词都源于拉丁语单词vacca,意思是奶牛。

According to the OED, this is due to English physician and scientist Edward Jenner's pioneering work on vaccination against smallpox in the late 1790s and early 1800s.
根据《牛津英语词典》,这要归功于英国医生兼科学家爱德华•詹纳在18世纪90年代末和19世纪初在天花疫苗接种方面的开创性工作。

>Why narcissists get promoted so easily
为什么自恋者更易升职?

A narcissist's self-image may do a great job of encouraging their managers to promote them, according to a recent study in the Journal of Personality.
近日发表在《人格杂志》上的一项研究指出,自恋者塑造的自我形象可能会极大地鼓励主管提拔他们。

The research included two questionnaire-based studies of 259 employees and 178 supervisors, where each assessed multiple statements regarding themselves and a potentially promotable employee.
该研究基于两项分别面向259名员工和178名主管的问卷调查。研究人员让前者根据不同表述对自身情况做出评估,并让后者回答什么样的员工可能获得升职。

The results showed that narcissist employees were more self-promotional of their work and had an inflated sense of power in the workplace.
结果显示,自恋的员工更爱宣传自己的工作成绩,而且会高估自己在职场中的能力。

It also showed that supervisors were more likely to promote employees who displayed these narcissistic traits, possibly due to their grandiose perception and displays of power.
研究还发现,主管更可能提拔那些展现自恋特征的员工,可能是因为他们能制造出华丽的假象,并给人强有力的感觉。
