The husband of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was sentenced to five days in jail and ordered to pay $6,800 in fines and restitution on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to causing injury by driving under the influence of alcohol in Napa County, California.

However, Paul Pelosi, 82, will avoid further incarceration after the judge gave him four days’ credit for time served following his arrest and ordered him to perform eight hours of community service in lieu of the one remaining day, according to his attorney Amanda Bevins.

The venture capital executive was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he was involved in a two-car crash in California's wine country in May.

Europe is experiencing its worst drought in at least 500 years, with almost two-thirds of the continent in a state of alert or warning, a European Union agency said on Tuesday.

In its August analytical report, the European Drought Observatory said some 47 percent of Europe is under warning conditions due to a severe lack of soil moisture.

Another 17 percent of countries are in alert condition.

The drought has disrupted inland shipping and electricity production and reduced the yields of certain crops.

Summer crops have suffered, with 2022 yields of maize set to be 16 percent below the average of the previous five years and soybean and sunflower yields set to decrease by 15 and 12 percent, respectively.

Athletic icon Usain Bolt has moved to trademark a logo showcasing his signature victory celebration pose.

The retired Jamaican sprinter submitted an application in the US last week.

He is known globally for the move - in which he leans back and gestures to the sky - as he routinely struck the pose after winning gold medals and setting world records.

Bolt still holds the world records for the 100m and 200m, making him the fastest man in history.

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Bolt filed his application for the trademark on Aug 17.

He intends to use the image on items including clothing, jewelry and shoes, as well as restaurants and sports bars, the filings show.

Bolt applied to register a similar trademark 12 years ago, but this has since lapsed under US law.

> Hungary's weather chief sacked over wrong forecast

Hungary's top two weather experts have been fired over a mistaken weather forecast that sparked political uproar. What had been billed "Europe's biggest fireworks display" had been organized for Saturday evening to celebrate St. Stephen's Day.
匈牙利的两位顶级气象专家因错误的天气预报引发政治骚动而被解职。为庆祝匈牙利国庆日(圣斯蒂芬节),被称为 "欧洲最大的烟花表演"的活动原本被安排在8月20日晚上举行。

But seven hours before the scheduled start, the government postponed the event, citing extreme weather warnings.

The weather, however, stayed calm - leading to the sackings of the head and deputy head of the weather service.

Some 40,000 fireworks were ready to be launched from 240 points along a five-kilometer stretch of the Danube River in central Budapest in a display usually watched by up to two million people.

But the rain storm the National Meteorological Service had predicted changed direction and struck parts of eastern Hungary instead, missing the capital entirely.

On Monday, Innovation Minister Laszlo Palkovics sacked the service chiefs, with immediate effect.
