Question: Why do some people use I have got more than I have? Does it mean the same thing?

Both of these constructions mean the same thing, and are both perfectly correct. People from different places may have grown up using one more than the other.

In terms of grammar, the difficulty is using short answers or substitutions. Note:

• “Do you have a cat?” “Yes, I do.”

• “Have you got a cat?” “Yes, I have.”

• Mary’s got a car but I haven’t.

• Mary has a car but I don’t.
