>New rules to curb misuse of facial recognition tech

The Supreme People's Court issued a judicial document on Wednesday setting out guidelines for the use of face-scanning technology and protection of people's identities and privacy.

Shops installing face-scanning systems to gather consumers' data without their permission and software operators forcing users to give their facial information will be in violation of people's personal rights, the document said.

When online platforms or apps try to get the approval of users in processing their facial information, the specific clauses must be presented to users for special consideration rather than buried in the general terms of use, says the document.

It also bans the practice of forcing users to agree to facial recognition terms if they want to use their services that do not rely on accessing facial information.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday maintained its global economic growth forecast at 6% for 2021, with economic prospects diverging further across countries since April's forecast, according to the latest World Economic Outlook (WEO).

According to the latest projection, growth prospects for advanced economies this year have improved by 0.5 percentage points to reach 5.6%, while those for emerging market and developing economies this year are downgraded by 0.4 percentage points to 6.3%.

Close to 40% of the population in advanced economies are fully vaccinated, compared with 11% in emerging market economies, and a tiny fraction in low-income developing countries, IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath said at a virtual press briefing.

The New Bund Global Economic Organization Cluster was unveiled in Shanghai's Pudong New Area on Wednesday, as part of its efforts to attract more international economic entities to drive high-quality growth.

Currently, a total of 10 international economic organizations have set up offices in the New Bund of Pudong (Qiantan Area).

China issued a guideline on July 15 to support the high-level reform and opening-up of Pudong. The guideline listed measures to build Pudong into a pioneer area for socialist modernization. The guideline also said that Pudong should play a role in drawing more international economic organizations and multinational companies' regional headquarters to the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.

>Long-awaited hoops medal celebrated

After years of waiting for a team sports medal in Olympic basketball, the Chinese Women's 3X3 Basketball Team delivered a bronze medal to those dreamers on Wednesday, defeating France 16-14 at Japan's Aomi Urban Sports Park.

The last time China won an Olympic medal in basketball was at the 1992 Barcelona Games, when the women's squad finished runner-up in the game's ordinary 5-a-side version.

Besides the good news from the basketball court, Team China also gained the No 2 position in the medal tally on Wednesday, as it clinched three golds in a row and broke the world record in women's quadruple sculls.

Wang Zongyuan and Xie Siyi led all the way in winning the men's 3-meter synchronized springboard, with 467.82 points, earning the Chinese diving team its third gold medal at the Tokyo Aquatics Center.

Weightlifter Shi Zhiyong claimed gold in the men's 73-kilogram weightlifting, with 364kg in total.
