China's Ministry of Education, in collaboration with seven other authorities, has issued a plan to build a stronger workforce for the country's basic education system.

The plan aims to expand the number and improve the quality of teachers, and meet demands for China's basic education development by 2035.

China will further improve teachers' professional ethics and competence by introducing talent nurturing programs and reforming targeted training.

Teacher resources will be more balanced, as special teacher cultivation plans for undeveloped areas in China's central and western regions will be put into practice.

National-level pedagogical bases and coordinated innovation platforms will also be built to strengthen the education system for teachers.

China's tax authorities have deferred 256.7 billion yuan of taxes for micro, small and medium manufacturing enterprises in March, according to the State Taxation Administration. A total of 2.57 million enterprises benefited from the delay, the administration said.

China deferred payments for the fourth quarter of 2021 to ease the impact of rising costs. The delay will be extended by six months.

In addition, the administration plans to improve the tax management information system and optimize payment delay service procedures while implementing tax and fee cuts and issuing refunds.

2021 was the deadliest year in US history, and new data and research are offering more insights into how it got that bad.

The main reason for the increase in deaths?

COVID-19, said Robert Anderson, who oversees the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s work on death statistics.

The agency this month quietly updated its provisional death tally.

It showed there were 3.465 million deaths last year, or about 80,000 more than 2020’s record-setting total.

COVID-19 deaths rose in 2021 to more than 415,000 — up from 351,000 the year before — as new coronavirus variants emerged and an unexpectedly large number of Americans refused to get vaccinated or wear masks, experts said.

The coronavirus is not solely to blame.

Preliminary CDC data also shows the crude death rate for cancer rose slightly, and rates continued to increase for diabetes, chronic liver disease and stroke.

Drug overdose deaths also continued to rise.
