Beijing is planning its largest ever revamp of the city's imperial-era neighbourhoods and the ancient lanes in an effort to preserve cultural relics ahead of the Olympic Games next year.

Renovation work would see 1,474 courtyard properties spruced up in 40 Beijing "hutong", or alleyways, in four inner city districts, the Beijing News said.

据《新京报》报道，北京正在计划对旧城区进行新中国成立以来规模最大的一次综合修缮工程，希望在明年的奥运会之前保护北京文化遗产。修缮工作将在四个城区开展，涉及40条胡同的1474个院落。

这里，“revamp”表示“修缮，修补”，旧街巷修缮表示为“the revamp of ancient lanes”。北京旧城区原为明清时代皇城地区，因此，对北京旧城区街巷修缮改造可以说“the revamp of Beijing’s imperial-era neighbourhoods and the ancient lanes”。
