国家主席胡锦涛2月26日下午在人民大会堂会见了来访的美国国务卿赖斯。赖斯表示，美方在台湾当局推动的“入联公投”问题上多次表明立场，认为“入联公投”不应举行。那么“入联公投”应该怎么表达呢？

Rice said the United States appreciates Chinese efforts in resolving issues such as Darfur, and hopes China will continue to play a positive role. She reiterated her country's adherence to the one-China policy and again warned the Taiwan authorities against an attempt to hold a referendum on the island's UN membership.

赖斯表示，美方感谢中方在达尔富尔等问题上做出的积极努力，希望中方继续为有关问题解决发挥积极作用。她再次重申了美方坚持“一个中国”的立场并反对台湾当局推动的“入联公投”。

这里的referendum就是“公民投票”的意思。Hold a referendum on the island's UN membership 是就台湾申请加入联合国一事举行公民投票，简称“入联公投”，the island 指的当然就是台湾岛了，因此我们也可以说a referendum on Taiwan's UN membership。
