美国得克萨斯州警方4月7日宣布，他们近日根据举报搜查了当地的一个“一夫多妻制”宗教组织的巢穴，共解救出534名妇女和儿童，这个数字比之前当局公布人数的2倍还要多。受害者中有很多人可能遭到了严重的性侵犯，甚至有不少人被囚禁在此多年，从来没有接触过外界。

该报道中，polygamist指someone who is married to two or more people at the same time（多配偶者），根据不用的语境可以译为“一夫多妻者”或者“一妻多夫者”，polygamy就是“多配偶制”，这样的婚姻制度现在已经很少见了。 我们所知道的“一夫一妻制”是monogamy，“遵守一夫一妻制者”就是monogamist。

上面的报道中，还有一个短语不得不拿出来说一下，a brush with the law，意为 a brief encounter or experience with the police because of a crime，即犯法。

例如：If you don't want a brush with the law, stop doing that!。如果你不想犯法，就停止做那件事。
