In the prim 1950s, college dorms were off-limits to members of the opposite sex. Then came the 1970s, when male and female students started crossing paths in coed dormitories. Now, to the astonishment of some parents, a growing number of colleges are going even further: coed rooms.

该报道中，coed room就是“男女合住一屋”的意思，coed来源于coeducational一词，指的是of or relating to an education system in which both men and women attend the same institution or classes（男女同校的），比如：a coed university（男女同校的大学）；引申而来的意思就是open to both sexes（男女合用的），比如：a coed dorm（男女合住的宿舍）。此外，coed还特指a female student in a coeducational institution, esp. in a college or university（男女合校的高校女学生）。
