[ 2007-02-25 13:53 ]

All across Wales around the beginning of March, the country comes alive with meadows of richly coloured flowers as the Daffodils begin to bloom. Brought to Wales by the Romans and named after the Greek god Narcissus, who looked into a pool saw his reflection and fell in love with himself, the Daffodil is the national flower of Wales and along with newborn lambs, heralds the arrival of Spring. Also as the the Daffodil begins to bloom around the 1st of March, it has also come to symbolise St Davids Day, commemorating the patron saint of Wales and you see many a patriotic Welsh person wearing a Daffodil in their lapels. The Daffodil is a fairly young emblem of Wales, gaining popularity in the 19th century as women especially, were fond of this bright cheerful flower. At the beginning of the 20th century it became even more closely associated with the Principality when Welshman and British Prime Minster David Lloyd George wore it on St David's Day and at ceremonies to mark the investiture of the then Prince of Wales. They come in all shapes and sizes, from a rich yellow to one that looks just like a fried egg!
