The first national botanic garden of the 21st century.
Gardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol Cymru – National Botanic Garden of Wales
Based on the site of the old Middleton Estate, a Regency Parkland, the National Botanic Garden of Wales stretches over more than 500 acres of beautiful pollution-free countryside. The first national botanic garden of the 21st century and the first to be created in the UK in nearly 200 years, the National Botanic Garden of Wales opened its doors to the public on 24 May 2000.
The guiding principles of the botanic garden are sustainability, conservation and education. Its surroundings include gardens, lakes, woodlands, undulating hills and wildflower meadows, which provide a variety of micro-climates for plant and animal life to thrive. In-situ conservation of some of Britain’s rarest plants sits easily alongside the wonder of the Great Glasshouse, the largest single span glasshouse in the world, and the Mediterranean landscape it contains.
Botanic gardens have come a long way from their original roles as places to study plants for their medicinal and economic properties. The National Botanic Garden of Wales provides opportunities for people to learn about their environment, enabling them to care for it and the threatened species that populate it. The rural setting is perfect for providing modern society with a wealth of opportunities to grow and reawaken their links with nature and the garden is dedicated to making a positive contribution to the world through its science and education programmes.
