The recruitment for the Games volunteers was launched in April last year, and the response was phenomenal with one million people registering their interest in becoming a volunteer.

Among all the applicants, 90 percent of the volunteers are local residents and 70 percent are students and staff of higher education institutions in Guangzhou.

To allow volunteers to better serve the event participants and spectators in a comfortable atmosphere, local organizers prepared training programs covering language, service skills and knowledge about Guangzhou and all 45 participating countries and regions.

The Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games has deemed that they need approximately 590,000 volunteers, including 90,000 that will work inside the 53 venues and another half a million will assist residents and event spectators.
