Hi, I’m Sam from BBC Learning English, and today we’re going to look at the differences between ‘to match’, ‘to fit’ and ‘to suit’ when talking about clothes.

‘To match’ simply means that two things are the same or very similar, that they look good together.

Your blue shirt matches your blue eyes.

‘To fit’ means that something is the correct size.

My glasses don’t fit.

This is a fact, not an opinion.

So, if you want to say that you think someone looks good in what they’re wearing, to pay them a compliment, then we use the verb ‘to suit’:

That dress really suits you!

Yes, it looks and sounds the same as the noun ‘a suit’. The meaning and how we use it are different, but the spelling and pronunciation are the same: NOT /swiːt/, /suːt/.

用法总结

1 我们可以用动词 “match” 谈论两者 “相似,相配,看起来协调”,比如衣物的颜色、图案、款式等。

Your blue shirt matches your blue eyes.

Our tops match! They’re both in stripes!

2 我们用动词 “fit” 谈论 “衣物的尺寸和大小合适,剪裁合身”。一件衣物是否 “fit” 是客观事实,而不是主观看法。

My glasses don’t fit.

He can’t fit into his jeans. He has grown taller.

3 我们可以用动词 “suit” 来表达个人看法,称赞衣物 “很搭,很适合” 某人。

That dress really suits you!

Those trousers don’t suit you. You should wear something brighter.

4 注意:动词 “suit(适合)” 和名词 “suit(西服,套装)” 虽然含义不同,但是发音相同,音标为 /suːt/。
