As prices and crime skyrocket, New York City stores have taken to locking up staples like toothpaste and soap to prevent crooks from stealing and then hawking the products on the sidewalk or online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay.

At Duane Reade’s store in the Port Authority bus depot, the shelf-stable product Spam — only $3.99 a can — is now being stocked in plastic, anti-theft cases.

Employees at the store said thefts have been surging over the past two-plus years, with one estimating a minimum of four shoplifters every evening shift.

Petty larceny complaints for the NYPD Midtown South Precinct, which includes the Port Authority bus terminal, have shot up 52 percent — to 1,771, through July 24 — compared with the same period last year.

More than 4,300 dinosaur footprints have been discovered in Zhangjiakou, North China's Hebei province, the most found in one spot in the country, according to the Department of Natural Resources of Hebei, which recently disclosed related survey results.

From the footprints, scientists can determine how dinosaurs walked, calculate their length, weight and size, and even estimate their walking speed.

The site in Zhangjiakou has surpassed the record set at a site in Sichuan province that has over 900 dinosaur footprints.

The site has been covered up for protection after experts carried out three-dimensional imaging and cast molds of the footprints, according to Hebei's natural resources department.

Boosting domestic demand and stabilizing the property sector will be key priorities for China's central bank for the rest of the year, in order to keep the nation's economic recovery well on track, officials and experts said.

Efforts will be made to maintain steady loan growth, promote declines in real lending rates while keeping them stable overall, and make good use of financial tools to support infrastructure construction, the central bank said in a statement after its midyear work meeting.

The central bank will also keep financing of the property sector stable and implement different credit policies based on the conditions of local property markets, as part of its efforts to resolve risks in key areas.

Zhu Haibin, JPMorgan's chief China economist, said it is critical for the central bank and other authorities to step up efforts to mitigate the liquidity woes facing property developers to prevent major risk spillovers into other sectors of the economy.

> Israeli scientists make model synthetic mouse embryo with stem cells

Israeli researchers have created synthetic mouse embryos using mouse stem cells, and the breakthrough was published in the US journal Cell.

The synthetic models developed normally until day 8.5 – nearly half of the mouse 20-day gestation period – by which stage all the early organ progenitors had formed, including a beating heart, and a brain with well-shaped folds, a neural tube and an intestinal tract.

Professor Jacob Hanna, one of the authors of the paper, said that it was possible to grow synthetic human embryo models based on the research, which could provide tissues and organs for transplant.
