Tea, originating from China and celebrated worldwide (茶起源于中国,盛行于世界 chá qǐ yuán yú zhōng guó,shèng xíng yú shì jiè), carries a rich history and profound cultural significance.
On July 26th, an exhibition featuring exquisite tea culture artifacts (茶文化精品文物展, chá wén huà jīng pǐn wén wù zhǎn) officially opened at the Hebei Museum (河北博物院, hé běi bó wù yuàn). Co-hosted by the Palace Museum (故宫博物院, gù gōng bó wù yuàn) and Hebei Museum, this exhibition marks the second stop of the global tour "Palace Museum and the World of Tea (故宫·茶世界, gù gōng · chá shì jiè)".
The exhibition is divided into four sections (四个单元, sì gè dān yuán): "Exquisite Palace Teas (宫中佳茗, gōng zhōng jiā míng)," "Qianlong and Tea (乾隆与茶, qián lóng yǔ chá)," "Origins and Evolution of Tea Practices (茶事源流, chá shì yuán liú)," and "Tea Fragrance in Yan Zhao (茶香燕赵, chá xiāng yān zhào)." It features 160 artifacts and historical materials from the collections of the Palace Museum, Hebei Museum, and China National Tea Museum These pieces narrate the development of Chinese tea culture, highlighting its historical journey, regional connections, ethnic integration, and global impact (中国茶穿越历史、连通地域、融合民族、影响世界的发展历程, zhōng guó chá chuān yuè lì shǐ、lián tōng dì yù、róng hé mín zú、yǐng xiǎng shì jiè de fā zhǎn lì chéng).
In November 2022, "Traditional Chinese Tea Processing Techniques and Associated Social Practices (中国传统制茶技艺及其相关习俗, zhōng guó chuán tǒng zhì chá jì yì jí qí xiāng guān xí sú)" were inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (被列入联合国教科文组织人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录, bèi liè rù lián hé guó jiào kē wén zǔ zhī rén lèi fēi wù zhì wén huà yí chǎn dài biǎo zuò míng lù). This recognition underscores the cultural value of Chinese tea culture. The collaboration between the Palace Museum and Hebei Museum for this exhibition aims to tell the story of China through the medium of tea.
The exhibition will run from July 26 to Oct 27, 2024.
