As the past unfolds, we learn about the lives of two inseperable boys growing up in pre-war Germany. Yet as the long shadow of Nazism dominates their lives, one becomes an officer in the SS and the other a pawn of the system.

Thirteen years after the war, their children meet. The dark past of their forebears threatens to stand in the way of the pair's love for one another.
