Keeping Mum is a 2005 British black comedy film starring Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Maggie Smith.
In the opening scene, a pregnant young lady called Rosie Jones (Emilia Fox) is traveling by train, and her very large case starts leaking blood. When questioned by the police, she calmly reveals that the two dismembered bodies inside are her unfaithful husband and his mistress. She is then sentenced by the judge (Roger Hammond) to a secure unit for the criminally insane.
Forty-three years later, in the village of Little Wallop, Walter Goodfellow, the vicar (Rowan Atkinson) is very busy writing the perfect sermon for a conference, and does not fulfill the sexual needs of his wife Gloria (Kristin Scott Thomas). Gloria has an affair with her golf instructor, Lance (Patrick Swayze), who also practices voyeurism: video-taping her daughter Holly undressing from outdoors. Holly (Tamsin Egerton) frequently has a new boyfriend, with one of whom she noticeably has sex with a minibus in front of the house. Son Petey (Toby Parkes) is bullied by schoolmates led by Billy Martin. Due to his work, his father notices little of all this.
Then, the new housekeeper Grace (Maggie Smith), arrived unexpected. Walter and Gloria met her the time when their son Petey wasn't fetched in school but actually, he was seen by Grace and she got him. When his parents saw him and Grace, Gloria was too angry because she thought that Grace was trying to get him from them. But once Grace gave an envelope with her name, she was immediately welcomed by the vicar.
When Grace came, she knew some problems in the house — Clarence, the neighbor's (Mr. Brown's) raucous dog who disturbs the sleep of Gloria, the bullies of Petey, and the golf instructor Lance after she knew that Gloria and Lance was having an affair. She solved these problems through killing. She first killed Clarence, then Mr. Brown, the owner of Clarence, who finds out that his dog was killed. She also sabotages the brakes of the bikes of the bullies that bullied Petey, which results in an injury which makes Petey, who thinks the boy is dead, very happy. After that, the golf instructor was the next after she saw him taking videos of Holly undressing from outside.
Gloria and Holly discover the murders. Grace then reveals that she was Rosie Jones after Gloria and Holly watched a TV News chat show about murderers on parole. There they discovered that Grace was a killer. She also reveals that she is Gloria's long-lost mother. Grace is about to kill a nosy neighbor (Mrs. Parker) because she thought that Mrs. Parker knew everything about the murders. While she is visiting to discuss the problem of the church flower arranging committee, Grace appeared and said "That's enough of that, Mrs. Parker," then attempted to hit her on the head with a frying pan but the pan did not hit her head. It is prevented by Gloria, who explains the misunderstanding, but due to the shock, the neighbor dies of a heart attack anyway. Gloria tells Grace that when having a problem with someone, one cannot just kill them. She replies that her doctors kept telling her the same, but it was the one thing they could never agree on. Grace eventually leaves the family when order seems to be restored among them.
At the end of the movie, Walter was talking to Bob and Ted, the water works employees. They talked about the pond at the vicar's house. They said that there is algae there and for the situation not to become worse, Bob and Ted stated the only one option — pumping it dry. Before that, Grace put the dead bodies by the pond. Because of that sole option, Gloria did what Grace did — killed the water works employees! (answers.com)
