A point guard. The hero if the hard court. A single player with unique skills -and a nervous system made of steel.
Hi, I'm Dr Greg Wells. Basketball is all about speed, power and intensity. And no one controls these factors more than the point guard. The point guard is the leader of the team, and so much more. Point guards need to survey an entire court at once. Like an air traffic controller at a busy airport, they're crafty multi-taskers.
To help navigate the action, they rely on extra-ocular muscles: Six muscles that move their eyes. The faster the eyes move, the more information that can be processed. Our retinas have 100 million photo-receptor cells. They convert light into nerve signals -and warnings.
But here's the challenge: a point guard has to watch that their eyes aren't giving away the play. This is where the game gets physical. Point guards need a lot of strength, but they're typically smaller than other forwards. Bulking up helps, but they also need to alter their brains to take the pain. The brain floods the body with pain-killing endorphins.
Endorphins are a similar chemical to the painkiller known as morphine. The hypothalamus, a gland in the base of the brain, shoots it into the nervous system - where it acts directly to block pain signals from reaching the brain. So by fighting their body's instinctual responses, point guards essentially re-wire their brains.
Use your peripheral vision... And master the brain, to block pain... That's how you shoot, for gold!
