How Green Was My Valley
Richard Llewellyn
Published in 1939, How Green Was My Valley is a beautiful and nostalgic look back at life in Wales
Richard Llewellyn was born in Hendon, London, in 1906. After his death in 1983 it was discovered that his claims to have been born in St Davids in Pembrokeshire were false, although he did have Welsh ancestry.
His turbulent younger years saw him living in a number of countries around the world, and at the age of 19 he joined the Regular Army.
How Green Was My Valley (1939), his first novel, was drafted in India. Although Llewellyn claimed it was inspired by his experiences in the Gilfach Goch area, he based much of it on conversations with mining families from the area. He did, however, spend some time in mining communities with his grandfather.
The novel focuses on the memories of Huw Morgan, a young man growing up in a South Wales mining community, and how the harsh lessons of his youth taught him there was little as beautiful as his memories of Wales.
How Green Was My Valley was made into a 1941 film, directed by John Ford and starring Walter Pidgeon and Maureen O'Hara. In the 1970s it was adapted for television by the BBC. The script was written by Elaine Morgan and the series starred Stanley Baker, Sian Phillips and Nerys Hughes.
How Green Was My Valley was chosen by Tower Colliery chairman Tyrone O'Sullivan as his Welsh book of choice.
在他1983年去世以后,人们发现他自己所说的出生于Pembrokeshire(彭布鲁克郡)的St Davids(圣戴维斯)是错误的,尽管他的确是威尔士人的后裔。
《我的山谷多么葱绿》在1941年被拍摄成电影,由John Ford(约翰·福特)执导、Walter Pidgeon(华尔德·皮京)和Maureen O’Hara(莫琳·奥哈拉)主演。20世纪70年代,它又被BBC翻拍成电视剧,由Elaine Morgan(伊莱恩·摩根)编写剧本,Stanley Baker(斯坦利·贝克)、Sian Phillips(希恩·菲利普斯)和Nerys Hughes(尼瑞斯·休斯)主演。
