施一公：我们需要培养更多更优秀的拔尖创新人才

作为我国第一所由社会力量举办、国家重点支持的新型研究型大学，西湖大学现状如何？全国政协委员、西湖大学校长施一公在回答记者提问时表示，因为西湖大学的诞生和发展是建立在中国高等教育大发展的土壤之上，可以说是中国高等教育发展到今天的必然产物。

"China's science and technology have made a great leap, but it is still lagging behind in some basic research areas. There are still some breakthroughs to be made and some demands from society to be met," he said. "So we need to nurture more outstanding creative talent."

施一公说：“中国的科学技术已经取得长足进步，在基础研究领域还有很大的差距，我国原创性的研究还不能够完全满足社会经济发展的需求。我们需要培养更多更优秀的拔尖创新人才。”

He added that this is the target and direction of China's educational system in the future and it is also why he and his colleagues have spared no effort over the past two years to establish the new higher education institution in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.

施一公表示，这就应该是未来中国教育努力的目标和方向，也是他和同事在过去两年不遗余力地创办西湖大学的根本宗旨。西湖大学位于浙江省杭州市。

The university has received more than 6,000 job applications from all over the world over the past two years, Shi added.

施一公介绍说，仅仅过去两年，西湖大学就收到了来自世界各地的6000多份应聘申请。

"We finally selected and hired about 100 world-class scientists, and more than 80 percent of them are talented Chinese who grew up in China and came back after study and research overseas," he said.

他说：“我们从中择优聘用了近百位世界级的科学家，其中80%以上是我们中国自己培养、然后输送出去的优秀学子。”
