'Stand' has many meanings in English.

Let's learn a few. Most commonly, 'stand' is a verb which means 'to be in a vertical position on your feet'.

I am standing at my desk.

We can also use 'stand' as a transitive verb which means 'to endure'.

My phone can stand a lot of damage.

We can also use 'can't stand' for things which are difficult to endure or really annoying.

I can't stand the noise in my office.

We can also use 'stand' to describe the action of buying something nice for someone.

I will stand you dinner this evening.

Finally, to 'stand on one's own feet'.

This is a fixed expression which means 'learn to be independent'.

Your parents might say, "it's time you got a job and stood on your own two feet."


1. “Stand” 作动词时最常用的意思是 “站立”。
I am standing at the window.
Stand up when he enters the room.

2. “Stand” 也可以作及物动词使用,意思是 “经受住,承受住”。 
My helmet can stand a lot of damage.
The car couldn't stand the impact.

3. 搭配 “can't stand” 表示 “受不了,忍不了人或事”。

I can't stand mushrooms.

4. 动词 “stand” 也可以表示 “请客,请某人吃饭”。

5. 固定表达 “stand on one's own (two) feet” 的意思是 “自食其力,自力更生”。
He needs to learn to stand on his two feet.
I learnt to stand on my own two feet when I left home.
